Sheffield Times celebrates local journalism at historic quarry

Ashley Falls, Mass. – June 1, 2010 – The Sheffield Times will celebrate local journalism on Saturday, June 19, at a garden party to be held in Ashley Falls. The event, entitled “What's Black and White and Read All Over?,” will run from 4 to 6 pm, and is a fund-raiser for the Sheffield Times, a community newsletter covering local Sheffield and Ashley Falls news. Editors of other South County community newsletters have been invited, along with noted Berkshire County journalists.

“People talk a lot about 'eating local' as a way to support local agriculture,” said Andrea Scott, co-editor of the Sheffield Times. “We are promoting the idea of 'reading local,' too, because we publish news and events essential to our community.”

“Champagne Berkshire Bellinis” and hors d'oeuvres will be served to vintage music on the Victrola in the beautiful gardens by Ashley Pond, once the historic marble quarry that provided cladding for the Washington Monument. The garden party is a rare opportunity to see this local site, now privately owned, Follow signs from Route 7 south to 7A in Ashley Falls to 11 School St. Suggested donation is $20, payable at the door. A silent auction will feature local art and other treats. In addition, Sheffield mums will be for sale.

The Sheffield Times has been published since 2001 by the Sheffield Association, a nonprofit organization that is also a sponsor of the annual Sheffield in Celebration festival in September. The Sheffield Association was founded to foster communication among the people, businesses and organizations of Sheffield and Ashley Falls, Massachusetts.
